This drill chuck removal guide outlines the methods of chuck mounting and removal for your power drill or hammer drill.
Power Drill Chuck Removal
- Unplug the power drill or remove the battery pack.
- Open the drill chuck jaws completely and determine the type of retaining screw fastened to the drill spindle (Fig.1) (May be Hex, Trox®, straight slotted of Phillips). If retaining
screw is Hex or Torx®, go to step 2.2. If there is no retaining screw, go to Step 3.
- If slotted or Phillips, use the appropriate screwdriver and holding the drill vertically (Fig.2), remove the retaining screw by turning clockwise (it is a reverse thread).
Save the retaining screw.
- If the retaining screw is Hex or Torx® headed, use an Allen 1/8" Hex or T15 Torx® wrench by placing the long end into the drill chuck and engage the head of the screw.Take pliers of Vise grip
and holing the drill vertically grasp the end of thes wrench and turn clockwise (Fig.3) to remove the retaining screw (it is reverse threaded). Save the retaining screw.
- To remove the drill chuck from the spindle, tighten the short end of a 1/4" or larger Allen wrench into the chuck (Fig.4).
- Place the drill on a table with the chuck facing you and strike to end of the Hex wrench sharply 2 to 3 times counterclockwise (Fig.5) with a soft-ended hammer or mallet.
- Contiue to loosen and remove the old drill chuck from the spindle by hand. Remove the 1/4" Allen from the old chuck.
 

Power Drill Chuck Replacement
- Thread the new replacement chuck clockwise onto the spindle. Tighten the short end of the 1/4" Allen wrench in the new chuck. Strike sharply 2 to 3 times with
a hammer clockwise to tighten chuck onto spindle (Fig.6).
- Remove Allen wrench from the drill chuck. Open the chuck completely and replace the retaining screw by tightening counter clockwise with either a screwdriver, 1/8" Hex or T15 Torx® wrench (Fig.7).
